The technological leadership of Befesa S&G regarding the pyrometallurgical treatment of steel dusts is expressed by the proprietary development of the SDHL technology. This technique marks a decisive step of optimizing the conventional waelz process by increasing the recovery and reducing the utilization of non-renewable resources.

The Befesa Zinc Freiberg GmbH & Co KG is the first plant using a wastewater-free leaching process to purify the waelz oxide and improve the product quality. For this unique feature the plant has obtained the environmental award of Chemnitz (Chemnitzer Umweltpreis, category production, organization and technology) in 2003.

The dusts and scales generated in stainless steel mills as a by-product are processed in Befesa S&G's recycling facilities using the plasma-arc respective the submerged arc furnace technology. By these technologically leading processes metal alloys are recovered with a maximum of product quality and returned afterwards to the stainless steel mills as a secondary raw material.
